Get the Right Care, at the Right Place

Our 24/7 symptom checker helps guide you to the right care. Answer a few questions about how you're feeling and get care options based on your symptoms.

Check Your Symptoms

If you or a loved one is injured, sick or in pain, knowing where to go for care can help you get the proper care quicker. Whether you need the emergency department, go to your nearest urgent care or opt for a virtual visit with your primary care provider, we at Ochsner Health, are here to help.

Let’s break it down for you for the most common conditions:

When to Visit Primary Care

Your primary care provider should be your first choice for care for acute and chronic illnesses because he or she is familiar with your medical history. Primary care offers comprehensive and continuous care.

Our Ochsner primary care locations are conveniently located across Louisiana and Mississippi, including the following areas Greater New Orleans, Northshore, Bayou region, River region, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles, North Louisiana, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Pensacola, Florida and Hilton Head, South Carolina.

During a virtual visit, you and your provider will meet using video within MyOchsner on a smartphone, tablet or computer. Your provider can answer any questions you have, address your healthcare needs and adjust your medications if needed.

With an E-Visit Message, you can provide symptoms or information about your condition through a detailed questionnaire in MyOchsner. Once submitted, your responses are shared with your care team, who use that information along with your personal medical history to determine a diagnosis and recommend a course of action.

When to Visit Urgent Care

Ochsner Urgent Care offers prompt, immediate care for non-emergency illnesses and injuries when you need it most. Whether it’s after hours, on weekends, or during holidays — or if you’re unable to see your regular doctor quickly — our walk-in clinics provide a convenient and reliable option. Urgent care locations in Greater New Orleans, Northshore, Bayou region, Baton Rouge, North Louisiana and Mississippi provide care for patients 6 months and older. In the Lafayette area, Ochsner urgent care clinics care for patients ages 1 and up.

Let your urgent care know when you'll arrive with Find Urgent Care Now through the MyOchsner portal or mobile app.

FAQs

Primary care physicians include internal medicine doctors, family medicine physicians and general pediatricians. All three types are similar in that they focus on care, diagnosis and treatment. However, they differ in who they treat. Internal medicine doctors typically treat patients 18 years and older. General pediatricians provide primary care for children from infancy to 18 years of age. As the name suggests, family medicine specialists treat the whole family (children and adults).

The field of primary care has expanded to include preventive medicine, screenings and population health for common conditions like hypertension and diabetes. Our clinics are configured as a medical home that includes non-physician practitioners, behavioral health specialists, diabetes educators and dietitians.

We offer a wide range of services at urgent care. We provide COVID-19 tests, flu testing and flu shots. We also treat:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Minor cuts and bruises
  • Nausea
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Skin rashes
  • Sprains and strains
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vomiting

If you are experiencing symptoms of a heart attack, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing and left arm pain/numbness, do not go to an urgent care location. Call 911 or go directly to your nearest hospital emergency room.

Our wait times vary by location. Our goal is to get patients in and out within 45 minutes. However, if we are busy, your wait time may be longer.

Not necessarily. The emergency team makes every effort to evaluate patients as soon as they arrive.

Sometimes, there are more patients in the emergency room than there are beds available. If a bed isn’t available, the emergency team might talk to patients in different locations like triage or small rooms. They also might use virtual technology called “TeleTriage” to make sure patients are safe and get their treatment started while they wait for a bed.
